2) Working with Fractions and Exponents. If your experience with fractions amounts to digging for “quarters” in your pocket, this chapter will be a huge help. Soon you will be performing basic operations with fractions without a second thought. You will also learn about exponents, handy little numbers that have a big effect. Chapter 2 shows you how to deal with both fractions and exponents.
3) Solving Basic Equations. Equations are an integral part of algebra. Since you will be coming across equations at every turn, understanding how to work with them is essential. Chapter 3 provides you with everything you need to know for solving basic equations.
4) Graphing Linear Equations. Graphing a linear equation is the mathematical equivalent to connecting the dots. The x and y values for a linear equation are simply points along a straight line that you can plot on a Graph. Chapter 4 shows you how to glean helpful information out of an equation and reveals a number of useful techniques for plotting equations on a graph.
5) Solving and Graphing Inequalities. While an equation merely gives you one or a handful of values as a solution, an inequality generally gives you a solution that covers a whole range of values. Fortunately, solving inequalities is very similar to solving equations, but there are a few quirks. Chapter 5 equips you with the skills to solve inequalities and plot them on a graph.
6) Working with Matrices. Despite the science fiction connotation, a matrix in algebra is nothing more exciting that a bunch of numbers grouped together by brackets. There are a number of special rules that govern the way you must treat matrices. Chapter 6 explains what matrices are and how to work with them.
7) Solving Systems of Equations. What could be more fun than solving an equation? Solving two equations, of course. Finding the mysterious values that will solve two equations might seem like a daunting task, but the methods covered in Chapter 7 make it a snap.
8) Working with Polynomials. While the name makes polynomials sound like an obscure shape from geometry class, polynomials are actually simple mathematical statements with an interesting name. Chapter 8 introduces you to the different types of polynomials and gives you a few tried-and-true techniques for working with them.
9) Working with Radicals. This is not a chapter about bringing down "the establishment." Radicals might seem like outlaws at first, but they are law-abiding expressions that are straightforward and easy to work with. Chapter 9 gives you a thorough understanding of how to work with these useful little expressions.
10) Factoring Expressions. Factoring is the mathematical equivalent of rewinding. When you factor an expression, it is like starting with the answer and working your way back to the question. Chapter 10 reveals a number of handy techniques for factoring expressions.
11) Solving Quadratic Equations and Inequalities. Solving quadratic equations and inequalities is a bit more tricky than solving basic equations and inequalities. Chapter 11 helps you recognize quadratic equations in the various forms in which they can appear and helps you decide on the best way to tackle them. This chapter will also help you solve quadratic inequalities.
12) Graphing Quadratic Equations. While the straight lines of linear equations are easy to graph, they are not the most exciting. Graphing quadratic equations, however, opens the door to the wonderful world of parabolas. Chapter 12 introduces these U-shaped curves and gives you the tools to graph them.
13) Glossary. This chapter is a great resource for quickly accessing definitions for algebra terms you may not be familiar with. When you need the explanation of an algebra term, you can easily refer to the comprehensive glossary in this chapter.
14) Solutions. Are you ready to check the solutions for all of the problems you worked on throughout this book? This chapter reveals the answers to all of those questions you worked so hard on solving.
